About Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park is a wildlife reserve located in southern Sri Lanka, known primarily for its large population of wild elephants. Established in 1972, the park was created to protect animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Its open grasslands, scattered trees, and water sources make wildlife spotting easier compared to denser jungle parks, especially during safari drives.

Travellers interested in nature-focused experiences often include Udawalawe while planning Sri Lanka tour packages, as it offers a quieter and more observational alternative to busy city routes. The park suits visitors who prefer early mornings, slow drives, and moments of silence broken only by bird calls or the sight of elephants moving freely across the plains.
