Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist temple complex located in central Sri Lanka, built into a massive rock rising above the surrounding plains. Dating back over 2,000 years, it consists of a series of natural caves transformed into shrines, filled with Buddha statues, painted ceilings, and wall murals. The site is also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla and remains an active place of worship, not just a historical monument.
Travellers often encounter Dambulla while moving between cultural sites in Sri Lanka tour packages, especially those connecting Sigiriya, Kandy, and nearby heritage towns. The temple visit feels less rushed than many landmarks, allowing time to climb, pause, and absorb the atmosphere inside the caves. The experience is shaped as much by the walk upward as by the artwork and quiet inside the chambers.
Entry Fee: AED 35 per person, which includes access to all five caves and temple areas.
